Live

A live tape that tells you what the number is.

Stocks come from the IEX book, crypto comes straight from Coinbase, and currencies use the ECB’s once-a-day reference rates. The green dot follows the age of the quote — not merely whether the server answered — and a lone bid is never passed off as a trade.

What each number means

  • Stocks: best bid and ask on IEX only, delivered by Alpaca. IEX is roughly 2.5% of US stock volume, so this is a view into the market — not the consolidated tape.
  • Crypto: Coinbase Exchange’s public stream. These prices update trade by trade and need no visitor key.
  • Currencies: the ECB’s daily euro reference rates via Frankfurter. Useful for a clean benchmark, not for timing an FX trade.

OTC shares are outside the IEX feed. A displayed bid, ask or midpoint is a market observation, not a promise that an order will fill there.

“Last” is normally the midpoint between IEX’s best bid and ask, not the last consolidated trade. After hours the book can become one-sided or very wide. Those rows say BID, ASK or WIDE instead of presenting a misleading midpoint. Snapshots poll every 30 seconds while the direct stream updates as quotes arrive.

All 29 currencies the ECB publishes a daily reference rate for, against the dollar. This is the complete set, not a selection — there are only 29.

PairCurrencyRateInverse

ECB euro reference rates publish once per TARGET business day, usually around 16:00 CET. They are daily benchmarks by design, not a live dealing price.
